Programme Overview
Institution: Wageningen University & Research (WUR)
Location: Wageningen, Netherlands
QS Ranking: #1 globally for Agriculture & Forestry
Duration: 4 years
What Is This?
Wageningen University & Research offers PhD positions in life sciences, food, environment, sustainability, and related fields. There are two ways to fund your PhD at WUR: apply for an already funded vacancy, or find your own funding. Your route — and what you pay — depends on which category you fall into.
Funding Options
Option 1 — Apply for a Funded Vacancy (Employed PhD). This is the most straightforward route. WUR regularly posts paid PhD positions. As an employed PhD candidate, you receive a monthly salary and pay no tuition fees. Browse current openings at wur.nl/en/jobs (filter by PhD).
Option 2 — WGS Sandwich PhD Programme (For International Candidates) The WGS Sandwich PhD Programme is aimed at capacity strengthening — building international scientific networks and reinforcing the knowledge base of partner institutions.
The grant covers a living allowance for 18 months in Wageningen, partial travel costs for the candidate and supervisors, visa costs, and use of facilities.
The structure is: ~9 months at WUR → ~30 months at your home country institute → ~9 months back at WUR to complete the thesis.
2026 Deadline: 11 May 2026, 23:59 CET
Note: Thesis printing costs and education budget are not covered — the host chair group is expected to pay these.
Option 3 — Bring Your Own Scholarship. You can come with an external grant (e.g., from your home country government). However, scholarship and externally financed PhD candidates pay a tuition fee of €1,000 per month of stay at WUR. Your scholarship must also meet WUR's minimum living allowance threshold — for candidates starting between 1 January and 1 July 2026, this is €1,950 per month.
Eligibility Requirements
You must hold a Master's degree comparable to a Dutch Master's degree. Master's degrees from the Netherlands and the European Higher Education Area are automatically recognised; all others are assessed by WUR's Doctoral Service Centre and may require evaluation by Nuffic.
English proficiency is required. You are exempt if English is your national language, or if your Master's was fully taught in English, or if it was from a Dutch university. Otherwise, a valid English language certificate must be submitted.
Proof of funding must be in place before you can be admitted.
For the Sandwich programme specifically, candidates must be nationals from one of the programme's eligible countries, be employed at their home institute throughout the PhD, and not already be enrolled as a PhD candidate elsewhere.
