3. Funding

There are no tuition fees for doctoral studies at Tampere University. However, having a study right does not automatically guarantee funding — you must secure it separately.

Main funding routes:

Salaried doctoral researcher position — The most common route. The university hires you as an employee on a fixed-term contract to work on a research project. You receive a monthly salary, social security, and occupational healthcare. All open positions are advertised at tuni.rekrytointi.com.

Doctoral Education Pilot — A major national funding initiative running 2024–2027, through which the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture has allocated €255 million to Finnish universities, including Tampere. Fully funded PhD positions are recruited under this scheme — check tuni.fi for open calls.

Personal grants and scholarships — From Finnish or international foundations. Useful for covering research costs, conference travel, or full study periods. Key sources include the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, and the University of Tampere Foundation.

Kela student financial aid — Finnish doctoral students may receive a state study grant for up to 9 months. Different rules apply to international students; check kela.fi for details.

Note: Adult Education Allowance is no longer available for doctoral studies beginning from autumn 2024 onwards due to changes in Finnish legislation. Always discuss your funding plan with your potential supervisor before applying.

4. Eligibility

Academic: A relevant Master's degree (or equivalent) is required. This means a 3+2 Bologna-system degree, or a degree of at least 4 years including a Master's-level thesis if from outside the Bologna system.

Language: Doctoral studies can be completed in Finnish, Swedish, or English. If studying in English, proof of proficiency is typically required unless your previous degree was taught in English.

5. Application Deadlines

There is no single universal deadline — it depends on the doctoral programme. Current open windows (as of March 2026):

Most doctoral programmes (including DPBEN, DPCEE, TLTO, TTITO, DPMBBE): Spring application period: 2 January – 29 May 2026, at 15:00 Finnish time (UTC+3). Results are announced on the last working day of each month.

Doctoral Programme in Humans and Technologies (DPHAT): 24 January – 30 April 2026, at 15:00 Finnish time (UTC+3). Results announced 9 June 2026; study right begins 1 August 2026.

International Doctoral Programme in Epidemiology and Public Health (IPPE): The 2025 intake has closed. The next application period is late 2026, for the programme beginning August 2027.

6. How to Apply

  1. Find a supervisor — Identify a professor whose research matches your interests and contact them directly, well in advance. A confirmed supervisor is required before you can be admitted. You can only apply to one doctoral programme per application round.

  2. Apply to a doctoral programme — Each programme has its own application process and requirements. Applications are submitted via studyinfo.fi. Contact the programme's administrative staff for exact instructions.

  3. Secure funding — Either apply for an open salaried doctoral researcher position at tuni.rekrytointi.com, check Doctoral Education Pilot vacancies, or arrange a personal grant before starting.

  4. Register as a doctoral student — Once admitted, activate your TUNI account, complete information security training, and enrol in the doctoral programme each academic year.
